A Stay at Hotel Digon in the Dolomites – Ortisei, Italy

Look no further – I have the hotel you need to stay at when visiting Ortisei.

I had spent a long time trying to find a hotel in this area that had a few more amenities at a reasonable price. The wellness hotels in the area can be extremely pricey and offer amazing amenities (some are well over $1000 a night) but we knew most of our days would be out of the hotel so it was a balance to weigh. I really wanted something that felt like the wellness resorts I read about without the crazy price tag. But then I found Hotel Digon through searching Google reviews and I had a feeling I found the perfect place to stay in Ortisei.

The Property

This family run hotel has been operated by the Stuflesser family for over forty years. And over that time, they have transformed Hotel Digon into a four star destination with full upgrades and amenities. The family and the staff are simply wonderful – they are so warm, welcoming, helpful, and inviting.

Hotel Digon is located in Ortisei and though it is not downtown, it is really not necessary for this portion of the Dolomites trip. While you can walk to town which takes about a half hour, the hotel offers free tickets for the bus system for which there is a stop right outside the hotel. Most people do arrive with a car and there is plenty of parking. There is also parking downtown Ortisei if you wanted to drive yourself.

What is lovely about the property is that since it is not downtown, it is among the green grass up on the hill top with no close neighbors and a stunning view of Ortisei and Seceda Mountain – it is simply an incredible view and worth the stay for just this.

The hotel is quite large with plenty of common areas to enjoy, including:

  • A bar space with plenty of lounge seats
  • An outdoor terraces
  • An indoor terrace right outside the pool with lounge chairs
  • Plenty of outdoors spaces besides the pool
  • A small area for kids with a slide, trampoline and play set.

Rooms

The rooms here are stunning. All finished with natural wood, a premium bathroom, and plenty of space. We booked a Heaven Suite which was a small upgrade from the Basic Room which had a balcony that overlooked Ortisei and the mountains which was a great touch – well worth the up charge.

Each room also comes with a robe, slippers, and pool towels to enjoy the pool and sauna during your stay. One feature that we have to mention is that there are automated shutters for the windows and doors to block out all the light without inhibiting the fresh mountain air in so it is perfect for sleeping.

Overall, these rooms were amazing and we were so excited to spend five nights here.

Amenities

The biggest amenities here are the infinity pool and full sauna.

The pool is what Hotel Digon advertises online and I have to stay it is even better in person. The infinity pool goes out into the countryside and there is just the most stunning view of Ortisei and the mountains in the distance. You can even spot the gondola station for Seceda at the top and if it is a clear day, the Seceda Mountain itself peeking up from behind. Or you can sit and watch the paragliders jump all day. The pool is open 9:30AM to 6:30PM. The pool has plenty of seating and during our stay, was mostly empty until late afternoon when everyone comes back from their excursions and then clears up after 6PM when everyone gets ready for dinner service.

And then there is the sauna that has a seating area to relax and then two rooms – one wet and one dry sauna. There is also a shower area along with a tea and rehydration station. The sauna is open from 3PM to 6:30PM.

Dining Options

Rates at Hotel Digon include half board which is breakfast and dinner.

Breakfast has a spread of fruits, jams, breads, yogurt and oatmeal, pastries, juices, coffees, along with rotating hot items such as eggs, bacon, German french toast, and pancakes. Breakfast service starts at 7:30AM.

Dinner is selected each morning with a choice for an appetizer and an entree. They are also able to accommodate any dietary restriction you may have along with always offering a vegetarian dish. When you arrive at dinner, there is a salad bar along with aperitivo styled snacks. Then the appetizer is served at your table followed by a soup and the entree. Dinner service always finishes with dessert. There are some deviations from this equation – such as having aperitivo on the terrace or a dessert buffet – but for the most part all the sections are covered. Dinner service starts at 7PM.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food throughout the entire stay and could not believe the caliber of food being served and that alone validated the price and then some. With five nights, we really got to see the wide variety of offerings and test the consistency. Trust me, you will be well fed during your stay and can indulge as little or as much as you want. We really were so happy with everything and very impressed.

Here are some example menus along with meals.

And examples of the spreads and dishes for breakfast and dinner.

Things To Do

It is easy to spend entire days of your Dolomite trip with the amenities of Hotel Digon! That being said, the hotel is generally very quiet until 3PM when everyone returns to the hotel after their adventure for the day. All year round there is so much going on and here are a few suggestions:

Final Thoughts

What a hidden gem! If you are visiting the Dolomites and staying in Ortisei, I cannot recommend Hotel Digon enough. I think the price is an excellent value for the stay. It was the budget we were looking for, especially since our stay was so long, and exceeded expectations on amenities, food and service. Rates vary throughout the season and during our visit, it was 135 euro per person per night. It is easy to spend entire days of your Dolomites trip just staying at the hotel itself, that is how great everything is. I know we will return in the future and without hesitation will be booking again with Hotel Digon.
