Hiking the Flatirons at Chautauqua Park – Boulder, Colorado

Boulder, Colorado is one of the happiest cities in the country which thrives by having a large downtown promenade along with mountain views of the famous Flatiron Mountains. These mountains are minutes away from downtown and lead to locals having some epic hiking, biking, rock climbing, and more all in their back yard. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, this outdoor destination makes for a wonderful getaway.

Going to the Flatirons is essential for a trip to Boulder. It is close to downtown and while a long walk, is walkable, and there is a free shuttle bus that transports people from downtown as well. If you do not have a car rented for your trip or are not planning on going out to the Rocky Mountains, the Flatirons make for a great option as well. If you do have a car, there is limited park in a lot as well as parking along the road that you will see people utilize. This is a popular hiking area so arriving early regardless of how you get there will be beneficial.

Trail Options

Chautauqua Park has several trails of varying length and difficulty that take hikers through scenic and up close views of the Flatirons. There is a Ranger Cottage to provide helpful information about the park and the trails. During our visit, there was a ranger stations right at the trailhead greeting everyone and answering questions. Make sure to take advantage – that is why they are there!

  • Royal Arch –  Challenging 3.3 mile out and back trail that takes hikers to the arch and a great view from the top gaining over 1400 ft elevation. This trail is extremely popular for the Chautauqua  Park.
  • First and Second Flatiron Loop – This hard trail takes a similar route to the Royal arch but goes towards the first and second Flatiron and loops back around for another view of the area. There are great views from the top on this trail as well and completionists can combine this trail with the Royal Arch to hit them all.
  • Chautauqua Trail – Easy 1.3 mile loop that takes hikers up 400 ft elevation for a great view of the flatirons before circling back to the parking lot through the fields. If you are lucky with your timing the spring, this field is covered with wildflowers. I think we were just a tad early for them during our trip in early May. This hike is great for families and allows for dogs so long as they stay leashed.

We completed the Chautauqua Trail for our trip and it was a very scenic trail. It can be completed as a loop and it is able to same each way with more uphill if you start counterclockwise. We started the trail clockwise and after a light ascent, we reached a picnic area followed by a set of stairs that took us across the valley and into the forest. After emerging from the trees, the descent down starts and the trail takes you though the fields which is a great spot for photos. All in, it is a very quick and easy trail that is a great way to see the area, especially if you are short on time, hiking with kids or pets, or have people in your group that cannot or do not want to do one of the more intense hikes or rock climbing in this area.

There is more than just the trails at Chautauqua  Park

  • Have a meal at Chautauqua Dining Hall located right next to the parking lot. It is surprisingly well rated and was a high consideration for our trip.
  • Beyond the dining hall is a picnic area if you wanted to bring your own food.
  • There is a great playground by the picnic area for kids to enjoy.
  • Want to see a show? Check the schedule for the Chautauqua Auditorium.

If you have more time, couple this with a neighboring Flagstaff Mountain where you can reach Panorama Point and Artist Point, see a show at the Sunrise Amphitheater, and have a meal at the popular Flagstaff House.

A visit to Chautauqua  Park is a must do when you are visiting Boulder. Even if you are not a hiker or rock climber, there are easy trails you can walk along or simply enjoy the view from the fields and the park.
