Dining Review: Lucile’s Creole Cafe – Boulder, Colorado

Lucile’s Creole Cafe is a super popular brunch spot which came highly recommended for our trip. The restaurant is located just north of Pearl Street in a house which reminded us of some of the restaurants in New Orleans. Opened in 1980, this family owned restaurant brought the first tastes of creole to this area and has made itself a brunch staple.

We walked in and had no issue getting a table on this Thursday morning. The restaurant is in a house so the floor plan of tables reflects that and it adds to the charm of Lucile’s. The menu features a great mix of options that highlight southern flavors and favorites.

To start, we ordered the homemade New Oreleans style beignets. This order came with four giant beignets that were smothered in powdered sugar. These were definitely a treat and the beignets themselves were soft, light, and not sweet which allowed for the sweetness to come from the powdered sugar. I am glad we had so many mouths to split this – I actually quartered each beignet they were that large.

We each ordered from the breakfast menu and collectively ordered the following:

  • Eggs New Orleans: Fried eggplant slices with creole sauce, poached eggs, and hollandaise. Served with grits or potatoes and a buttermilk biscuit.
  • Cajun Breakfast: Red beans (with meat), poached eggs, and hollandaise. Served with grits or potatoes and a buttermilk biscuit.
  • Eggs Pontchartrain: Fresh pan fried mountain trout, poached eggs, sauce bearnaise. Served with grits or potatoes and a buttermilk biscuit.

Everyone really enjoyed their dish. I ordered the Eggs New Orleans with the creole sauce on the side and I just loved using fried eggplant as an eggs benedict sub – it was so tasty. I also got that with the potatoes over the gits and while I instantly thought I was going to regret it when the plate arrived at the table – the potatoes looked like they were on fire spicy – luckily it was just paprika and the potatoes were actually great. Kevin ordered the Cajun Breakfast and adored every bite. It was a great balance of savoriness for breakfast. The beans had pieces of ham mixed in and the grits were well executed.

Each of the orders also came with a giant biscuit which was light and fluffy. There were ample condiments on the table but do not miss the strawberry preserves to dress that biscuit.

We highly recommend stopping into Lucile’s during your Boulder visit! Since this is such a great spot and they do not take reservations, make sure to pick a time that makes sense to avoid a long wait.
