Five great ways to visit New Jersey
New Jersey is an often overlooked state and as someone that originates and lives there, sometimes I can see why. But when looking at NJ objectively, it is quite impressive how much this small state has to offer. New Jersey is the most densely populated state and has close proximate to major Northeast destinations such as New York and Philadelphia. And if you want to escape the city life, New Jersey offers some reprieve! For those on a mission to visit all 50 states, let New Jersey surprise you as a fun stop along your journey.
1. The Jersey Shore
While many know the term from the reality TV show, the actual Jersey Shore is much different. New Jersey is blessed with a coastline full of beautiful sandy beaches that hug the Atlantic Ocean. There are tons of towns to choose from but to have the traditional experience, head south to Wildwood or Ocean City to get the true feel for the Jersey Shore. These towns are full of things to do. Spend the day basking in the sun or swimming, boogie boarding, or surfing in the ocean. Then spend in the evening walking along the famous boardwalk. Grab a slice of pizza, soft serve ice cream, caramel popcorn, salt water taffy’s – these are just a sampling of the treats you will find. The boardwalk also has piers with attractions for all ages to enjoy. You can read more about visiting the Jersey Shore here.

2. Cape May
Not too far from the “Jersey Shore” is Cape May, New Jersey – the southern most point in the state. At Exit 0, there are different things to do than you would find at the Jersey Shore which is why it is getting it’s own entry. Cape May is a wonderful destination to escape to and sought after by locals and out-of-staters alike. First off, Cape May has the best downtown (Washington Street Mall) full of boutique shops and dining. Turn your visit into a weekend and stay at one of the historic bed and breakfast inns – there are many that are well rated and keep guests returning each year. There are some amazing dining locations, breweries and wineries to choose from. While Cape May has the most peaceful beaches, the wildlife and nature trails here really add a unique element to visiting this area. Cape May is also NJ’s premiere locations for bird watching, Cape May is one of best spots in NJ! There are many viewing platforms and even boat tours you can take just for bird watching. The skies here have less light pollution, making for some wonderful night skies. You can read more about visiting Cape May here.

Lots of love for the southern portion of the state! Looking for nightlife vibes? Hit up the Atlantic City stripe for resort life full of lights and entertainment. Try your luck at the many games available, enjoy luxurious buffet restaurants, or book tickets to see a show. For those that enjoy dancing, there are many clubs available to explore. There are also beachfront areas, but you can also enjoy the pools at the resort or cross over the bridge into Brigantine. Outlet shopping lovers will also find themselves enjoying the name brand stores of the Tanger Outlets. There is also an airport in Atlantic City so if you need an entry point to the southern part of the state, this is often a great and affordable option.
4. Delaware Water Gap
Not into the ocean or sand and want to climb instead? Head to the central portion of the state and visit the Delaware Water Gap – a 70,000 acre national recreation area. The Delaware River cuts between Pennsylvania and New Jersey and at this particular portion of the river, there are several mountain peaks that offer wonderful views via hiking trails. There are even opportunities to summit a few peaks on more challenging trails and visit waterfall formations. Once you are done hiking, there are several nearby towns to enjoy. We love visiting during the fall foliage and getting apple cider donuts at a nearby farm after. You can read more about visiting the Delaware Water Gap here.

Visit the historic town of Princeton. For those without a car but planning on visiting Philadelphia of New York, Princeton is accessible via public train. Home to the only Ivy school in the state, this beautiful campus will transport you into another land. The buildings are beautiful, and the campus is very scenic so many sure to spend some time walking around, especially in the spring or fall when the trees are extra gorgeous.
