The Best Cannolo of our Lives – Trapani, Sicily

One food of our must try list was a true Sicilian cannolo. Remember, in Italian connolo is one and cannoli is multiple. Cannoli are not a foreign concept to us – as Italian Americans, we had cannoli all the time but Kevin and I both knew their potential was much greater than the representation we get at home. There are many places in Trapani to get a cannolo and we selected nearby Antica Pasticceria Tavola Calda Michele Bellezza. This pasticceria has been in operation since 1954 and makes beautiful displays of cakes, pastries and cookies. The cannoli are made to order which means the filling is not put into the shell until it is ordered. Our cannolo was presented to us shortly after ordering and it was beautiful and quite large! Kevin and I found a shady spot outside for our first bites and we immediately looked at each other in disbelief. Is this what cannoli are supposed to taste like?! It was a life changing cannolo and we were both amazed and sad at the same time. Amazed that a cannolo can taste this great – the shell was fresh, the filling was light, full of ricotta flavor, and not stuffed with confectioners sugar. And sad that we would never have a cannolo like this again – this cannolo ruined all future cannoli for us (and yes, even compared to other cannoli on this trip, this was by far the best). So there was our life before this cannolo and life after this cannolo. If you visit Trapani, you must get this cannolo.
