Dining Review: Chez Yvonne – Strasbourg, France
French dining is some of our favorite meal experiences. In the Alsace region, this French cuisine looks familiar but is certainly in a category of its own. Due to its history of being under France, then Germany, then France, then Germany again, and now France – Alsatian food is Germany with a French twist but is squarely Alsatian most importantly. Dishes are hearty, large, and rich featuring meat but finished in a French flare with a sauce or foie gras.
Dinner tonight was reserved at Chez Yvonne for a traditional Alsatian meal. We wanted to make sure we properly experienced the cuisine in this region and this restaurant is described as just that.
The interior is super cool as if we were sitting in someone’s dining room. There are multiple rooms bout overall this is not a big establishment. This spot is popular and during the Christmas Market season, reservations are required. For our visit, it was pretty crowded so this was a bopping – we saw many groups turned away for not having reservations.
The service here was incredible and the food came out minutes after we ordered – this team was ready for the Christmas Market crowds and did not mess around.
- House salad – We knew eating on this trip was going to generally be quite heavy so we wanted to fit in veggies when possible. Fresh, simple, and had a light dressing on it.
- Chicken with cream and mushroom with spaetzel – If I could just bottle this up and take it home I would. I just loved this dish as it was so creamy and savory.
- Smoked sausage with sauerkraut – Kevin wanted something simple and this dish fit that request. While the plate looks, well a bit pathetic looking, the sausage was delicious and was smoked to perfection. In the land of sauerkraut, it is only proper to pair the sausage with it which was great as well.
- Chocolate mousse – After having an amazing chocolate mousse earlier in the trip, we wanted to cap the meal in a similar way. However, this was the equally opposite and was one of the least favorite chocolate mousses we have had. Half the dish was whipped cream and the mousse itself was so heavy and thick.
Overall, we were very happy with our meal at Chez Yvonne and while it could suffer from attracting tourist, I do not think it is a tourist trap based on the quality of food and our experience. If you are interested in trying Alsatian food, I would recommend Chez Yvonne.
