Dining Review: Trattoria Tiramisu Mimmo and Son – Taormina, Sicily
Our dinner tonight was at the opposite gate to where we were staying so once we made it to the end, we made our way to Trattoria Tiramisu Mimmo and Son. At the recommendation of our host, I called at lunch time and was told I got the last reservation for the night at 9PM. When I went to check us in, they did not have a record of the reservation in their book but they were able to validate the conversation and seated us at a table. They turned away many people while we waited for the table to be turned as they were fully booked – and the people continued to show up all night. It sounded like everyone’s accommodations were recommending this spot. It definitely got me a bit nervous that we were in for a mediocre meal but we trusted the overwhelming positive reviews and our host.
After a short wait, we were seated at a table outside. The servers were non-stop running around to accommodate the quick turn over of tables and people waiting outside. It has been awhile since we have seen a place this crazy but they were definitely doing their best to keep up.
We each ordered a glass of wine – one white and one red to start our meal before the bread service arrived. Despite how full and chaotic things looked, the staff were able to keep up with the service.
- Lobster Linguine with Pachino cherry tomatoes I am salivating just writing about this dish. While I enjoy dissecting my shellfish for their succulent meat, they do it for you in the kitchen so it is less messy and ready to enjoy. Everything about this dish was wonderful, classic, and perfectly executed. Nothing was left on that plate!
- Pennette alla Mimmo with onion, bacon, tomato, cream, peppers and parmesan. This dish caught Kevin’s eye and was a little twist on carbonara. The pennette were smaller size pasta and while the dish was marked as spicy, it was a mild kick at most. The savory flavors all created just a delicious dish and he loved it.
- Tiramisu With the name of Trattoria Tiramisu, how could we not get the namesake dish? In fact, while we were waiting for our table, many people came up asking for take out orders of the tiramisu, which they do accommodate! And yes, the tiramisu was perfect with balanced flavors of the cream, chocolate, and espresso. We barely spoke while eating this as we were simply enjoying it too much.
I was certainly happy that the nerves I had waiting to eat here were not necessary. Despite how crazy busy they were, our meals were still perfect as if we were the only ones there. I would say to definitely secure a reservation during your trip ahead of time – especially if it is during the peak summer time season. Note that there are two restaurants in Taormina with the name Trattoria Tiramisu – make sure you are making reservations for the correct one.
